How common is abuse in intimate relationships?

Therapist Response

If we define abuse as one partner intentionally using physical force, words or psychological manipulation to hurt, demean, humiliate or harmfully control their partner, abuse is not uncommon in relationships. While victims often recount their experiences of being verbally, psychologically and emotionally abused it is difficult to say how common those types of abuse are due to lack of statistical information.
