Stories of Hope and Inspiration After Violence Stories of Hope - Lesson #4 Advice Police Officer Response
Response from a Police Officer
1. What are Drew’s greatest needs at this time in his life?
Drew appears to be doing fairly well. Drew is obviously involved in a batterers’ group and sees how this male group has positively impacted his life. He states that his wife had sought therapeutic assistance as well. This will hopefully assist Drew and his wife to better address problems before they build up to be large issues.
2. What might a local congregation offer to a man in Drew’s situation?
Even if it is not in a formal setting, the congregation can provide positive role models and trusted friends that can assist Drew and his wife through hard times. Also the congregation could assist by encouraging Drew not to drink. He states he was not identified as someone with an alcohol problem, but obviously things seem to go better with no alcohol. Additionally, it appears that the alcohol issue is important to his wife if she has already spoken with him about it and made deals with him to limit alcohol use.
3. How could a minister in the local area where the Barley family resides make connections with them?
Drew needs positive role models and good friends who have successful marriages. Start building relationship by having Drew and his wife join in social activities. Getting Drew and his children involved in sports programs offered by the church also seems a way that might be attractive to him – maybe a church softball team or children’s team he can help coach. I just think the church should also strive to build a connection with the family as well.
3. What challenges does ministering to a man like Drew present to a religious leader?
No one wants to be involved in a church that looks down on others. Christ showed love to everyone, which was part of his appeal. A congregation that shows love to everyone should naturally attract others.
