Mending Broken Hearts Mending Broken Hearts - Lesson #2 Advice Lawyer Response
Response from a Lawyer
Allan Jones responded to this situation beautifully. As someone who has represented abused women in legal proceedings and as a community advocate in the transition house movement I would have been happy to have worked with a minister like him. While consulting other professionals, though, it isn’t clear whether Mildred had contact with them herself or whether Allan Jones acted as a clearinghouse, so to speak, for their advice. I think for women like Mildred it is important to hear the message from many voices. While the voice that represented a strong faith perspective is clearly very important in a situation like Mildred’s, and Allan Jones’ support and endorsement of the other professionals is probably critical to Mildred, she would benefit from hearing the message in different ways from different people. Most especially it would important for Mildred to have contact with other women who have had experiences similar to hers. Knowing that other women experience abuse can help women to see that they are not to blame. It can also validate their decisions to protect themselves from further harm.
