Mending Broken Hearts Mending Broken Hearts - Lesson #2 Advice Social Worker Response
Response from a Social Worker
The Spirit is deeply wounded by trauma and abuse. Experiencing abuse raises spiritual, existential questions which are fundamentally a quest to find meaning in the experience. Thus questions like “Where was God in my time of need?” are not uncommon. A spiritual counselor can be helpful by:
- Clarifying scripture.
- Seeing forgiveness as a step in the healing process, after the victim has had time to express her anger, hurt, sense of betrayal and no longer views herself as ‘a victim.’ The act of forgiving then becomes a step of breaking the last vestiges of emotional control which is rooted in the abusive relationship. She is then able to see the abuse as a part of her life - not the totality of her life.
- When she has gained equilibrium i.e., healing has occurred, though it may never be complete, offering opportunities to use her experience to assist others.
