Mending Broken Hearts Mending Broken Hearts - Lesson #4 Advice DA's Assistant Response
Response from a DA's Assistant
1. What do you see as Jill’s greatest needs as she begins life as a single parent with three children?
Jill’s greatest need during as she begins life as a single mom will be making sure that she has a support system in place so that she doesn’t feel tempted to move back in with her ex-husband and start the cycle of abuse all over again. Even though Robert was abusive towards her, Jill may try to reconcile if she has difficulty making ends meet trying to support three children.
2. How did Pastor Dennis begin to win Jill’s confidence?
Pastor Dennis was a person who was present in the aftermath of the crisis to help Jill see that what her options were and that she did have options available. He was Jill’s voice of reason when she was too emotional to make a decision. If he had not been the intermediary, Jill would most likely not have taken any legal action. He was able to testify to the truth of her story.
3. How would you assess Dennis’ intervention with the Smith family? Would you have responded in a different or similar way?
Pastor Dennis’ intervention with the Smith family was key in preventing any further abuse. Because of his unique relationship with the family, he was able to make house visits and see the nature of their relationship. The court system cannot become involved until a victim has the courage or strength to press charges or an incident becomes so violent that the police are called to respond. Sometimes then it is too late.
